If you’re looking for a premium, high-end hatch, the Audi A3 and the BMW 1 Series should be real contenders. Each offers premium looks, luxurious touches, and brilliant features to make your drives easier and safer. But as they’re both very solid options, deciding which to go for can be tricky!
So we’ve put these models head-to-head to help you make your choice…

Both the Audi A3 and the BMW 1 Series have a premium look and feel which sets them apart from fierce competition in the small family hatchback market.
With sweeping horizontal lines and an elegant silhouette, the Audi A3 is the sleeker of the two, while the BMW 1 Series has a chunkier shape. Whichever your preference, each is available with a range of different trims like the sporty S Line on the Audi A3 or the M Sport trim on the BMW 1 Series.
The Audi A3 offers smooth handling and decisive electric powered steering, making for comfortable and confident drives. You can choose from a few different engine options including a 1.5-litre petrol option, which is perfect for trips around town, and an economical 2.0-litre diesel engine.
Behind the wheel, the BMW 1 Series is also engaging and smooth to drive. We think it’s just a cut above the A3 in this regard, thanks to its superbly agile handling and ability to remain comfortable and quiet even at high speeds. Its range of engine options is similar to the A3, with the frugal 2.0-litre diesel engine being the way to go if you cover many motorway miles.

The premium quality of these cars extends to their interiors, which are comfortable and luxurious. Inside the Audi A3, the layout is clean and minimalist with good quality materials used throughout, including Alcantara leather seats on certain trims. Opt for an A3 with Tech Pack equipped, and you’ll get Audi’s Virtual Cockpit. This will display information and sat nav directions on a crisp 10.25-inch or 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel, so you won’t have to look away from the road.
The BMW 1 Series is also sophisticated inside with great tech to make every journey enjoyable. You’ll get an easy-to-use infotainment system as standard, and features like automatic start/stop are sure to be a welcome addition.

The BMW 1 Series is available with 3 or 5 doors, with the latter being the better choice for families who prioritise practicality. The Audi A3 on the other hand, is no longer made with 3 doors, so the 5-door option is now the standard car.
Both models are tied when it comes to boot space, offering around 380-litres of boot space which expands to 1,200-litres when the seats are folded down.
