Driving experience

Both cars have a similar engine lineup, which includes petrol and diesel options ranging from 1.5 to 2.0 litres in capacity. As the X2 is lighter than the XC40, it’s faster and more agile on the roads which gives it more of a ‘hot hatch’ feel. The XC40 handles well too though, as it feels safe and secure around corners and absorbs bumps and potholes very comfortably.

Interior

The X2 and the XC40 each have impressive, high-quality interiors. Both cabins feel spacious in front, although there’s slightly less head room in the back of the X2 because of its sporty sloping roofline.

The BMW X2 gets an 8.8-inch media system as standard, with features like navigation and Bluetooth included. Meanwhile, the Volvo XC40 has a comparable 9-inch portrait centre screen that has live traffic information and voice activation.

Boot space & practicality

You’ll find generous boot space in both cars, which adds a lot of appeal for large families. The Volvo XC40 offers 460-litres which extends to 1,336-litres when the rear seats are folded down. The X2’s boot capacity is a slightly larger 470-litres and it has a load lip which makes lifting heavy items over much easier. Plus, the BMW X2 has an electric tailgate as standard, which is a great help when you’ve got your hands full.

Safety

You’ll be pleased to know the Volvo XC40 is outstanding when it comes to safety, boasting a perfect five-star Euro NCAP rating for crash safety. Volvo also offers active safety features like autonomous emergency braking which detects cyclists, pedestrians and other cars to help keep you safe.

The BMW X2 was also given a five-star safety rating and is available with features like a lane departure warning and high-beam assistant on certain models.
