Winter is on its way, and with it comes a drop in temperature and potentially icy roads. Regular maintenance and checks will help your car through the harsh winter months and give you confidence when taking to the wheel.
So, here are our top tips to prepare your motor…
In winter, it’s especially important to check your tyres regularly because snow, ice and rain can all increase stopping distances. Make sure tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm to be roadworthy, but many experts recommend replacing them once they get to 3mm.
Checking your battery is essential before winter sets in, as colder temperatures and an increased use of lights and heating can put it under strain. If your engine starts to turn over more slowly than normal, get your battery checked as soon as possible and replaced if necessary.
To ensure good visibility over winter months, check that your wipers aren’t damaged in any way and can clean your windscreen effectively. You should also top up your screenwash and give your windscreen a clean inside and out to get rid of any smudges.
Putting together a winter car kit is a great idea to ensure you have everything you need in case of an emergency. This could include a torch with batteries, de-icer, a blanket, warning triangle, a bottle of water and snacks. You should also make sure your mobile phone always has enough charge before taking to the road.
Antifreeze plays an important role in preventing the water in your engine’s cooling system from freezing. Before sub-zero temperatures hit, make sure yours is topped up with an equal mix of water and antifreeze.
