Searching for a supermini? There are so many brilliant options on the market, including the new Peugeot 208 and the Renault Clio. Both of these French frontrunners offer sporty style, good tech, and eye-catching interiors but which has the edge? Let’s put them head-to-head to find out…

 

Exterior design

Style is likely to play a big role when you’re searching for your perfect supermini. The Peugeot 208 and the Renault Clio are sure to appeal to the style-conscious, both adopting a modern, sporty shape with sharp lines and striking features. The latest versions of the Clio and the 208 are five-door only, though the Clio’s clever design hides its rear door handles in the C-pillars for a sleeker look. 

 

Driving experience 

There’s a range of engine options available with each supermini, including the Clio’s 1.0-litre petrol turbocharged engine and the 208’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. 

In terms of driving experience, the 208 is around 88kg lighter than the Clio, so its performance and agility is slightly improved. Running costs are about the same though, with both petrol engines returning around 70mpg. 

 

Interior and technology

Although the Renault Clio’s interior may not look as slick as the 208’s, it does offer a good level of comfort with plush materials and cushioned plastics throughout. Plus you get sat nav, CarPlay and Android Auto integrated with its seven-inch touchscreen to keep you connected. 

Build quality is similar in both superminis, but the Peugeot 208’s cabin has that wow factor and impressive technology integration. Features like customisable ambient lighting and virtual cockpit make for an enjoyable experience behind the wheel. 

 

Safety 

With a full five-star Euro NCAP score and plenty of standard safety kit, you can drive with confidence in the Renault Clio. You’ll get autonomous emergency braking, cruise control, emergency assistance and more.

The Peugeot 208 on the other hand, couldn’t quite match the Clio’s five-stars, achieving a four-star safety rating. It does offer some brilliant features as standard though, like a driver attention warning and speed limit recognition.
